expecting 2nd child need help?
I am 20 weeks pregnant and I also have a 3 1/2 year old girl. My little girl is excited for the baby talks about how she is going to help feed it and she will share her room to sleep. She went with to see the baby in a ultrasound in july and she got to hear the heartbeat. But she now has started preschool which is at her daycare that she has been at since she turned 2, well she is starting to act up. yesterday and today she hit a kid, and she thought it was funny. I asked her why and she stated she was mad. When asked what mad about she said because she was going to have a baby sister or brother. I am afraid will she lash out after the baby is born, what should I do. I am home during the evening time while dad is at work. we were going to take her thursday to find out the gender and so she can see the baby again. what else can I do.
She’ll take her cue from you. If you present the new baby as a good thing in your lives, she will eventually come to agree. If you start feeling sorry for her because you won’t be able to give her as much attention, she will start feeling sorry for herself.
Just behave as if getting a sibling is the most normal thing in the world – because for most kids, it is. But don’t let it dominate your interactions with her. A new baby is a huge deal for you, but she has other priorities. Make sure to do things she enjoys – before and after the birth. Spend one on one time with her after the baby is born so she knows you still consider her as important as her sibling.
Also, before you jump to the conclusion that she will lash out at the baby, make sure that what she is saying is accurate. Being caught in the act of hitting and asked why, she may have said the first thing that came to mind. It seems unusual to me that she would be angry enough about what is (at this point) an abstract, distant event to hit another child, especially away from home. A more logical response would have been to hit you. Kids say a lot of things; not all of them are true. But if she is really having issues with it, encourage her to express her feelings in a better way – through talking or art for instance. She may be young, but she needs to know that someone will listen and take her seriously.
