Is it better to use ‘baby talk’ when speaking to babies and young children or should you talk normally
as you would if you were speaking with adults? I read someone else’s question about what kind of things you should talk to children about, and that got me thinking about HOW you should talk to children. I have no children, am an only child, and have not had much experience with children. Thank you for your help!
Babbling is not good for the baby. The goo goo ga ga is actually bad for a baby’s development. However, motherease helps them learn the language much faster.
Motherease is the pitch, tone, and elongation of sounds you’ll hear a mom use when talking to her baby. It isn’t babble it’s regular talk just comes out in a different way.
It has been studied and when moms use the regular adult language the child doesn’t pick up on the language like another whose mom uses motherease. Also, a child whose mom uses motherease will not respond to someone who uses regular adult talk. This happened with my son who wouldn’t respond to his dad. My husband has since tried to mimic motherease and as baby (nine months) gets older he responds more to dad and others who don’t use motherease.
But, most women inistictively use it. I think it’s natures way. Also, a woman who is talking to a baby will usually autmoatically slip into motherease. I think it’s amusing to watch how nature works.

do you think baby talk can hinder a childs grasp of language and make it harder for them to learn to talk clearly?
I am a mom of 2 with 1 on the way, and i have never used baby talk because I do believe that it hinders them in their developing language skills. However, I won;t judge a person on their methods or beliefs, i am simply curious about the subject in relation to other parents.
I don’t use baby talk, but I do notice I talk in a higher pitch when talking to my baby (I think I read somewhere that babies respond to higher pitched sounds, but I do it unconsciously).
One reason I’ve never been into baby talk is that I believe we are raising adults, not children (did this come from Dr. Phil?), so we use regular adult language around our kids. When my 3 1/2 year old says a word that we can’t understand, he always says, “but I’m trying to enunciate.”
My Mom is a speech pathologist, and she’s always having to deal with school-aged kids whose parent thought it was soooooo cute that he/she said “wabbit” instead of rabbit, so they didn’t try to correct the problem at a younger age.
And in response to the person who asked if we’ve ever seen an adult still using baby talk–yes I have and it makes me want to tear my hair out!!! She talks baby talk to her husband, and when she is telling a story about her kids she will use baby talk. So annoying.
