how well does my imune system cover my baby from geting sick?
I have a 10 day old and a 18month old. I took my son to the docters today because he has been unwell and I noticed a rash on him…turns out he has the “english measels”! (hes been imunised – Im not sure why he has got them..) what is the chances of my 10 day old catching them? the docter said baby should be covered by my imune system but to try and keep them apart..
Also I got the vaccine against “swine flu” when I was about 6 months pregnant, should my baby be safe from swine flu this year?

I am not sure whether the Dr was referring to placental immunity or breastmilk immunity. If you have had the measles (english measles is the same thing as regular measles) your baby is protected for up to 6 months of age (potentially up to 9 months). If you have not, I am unaware of measles antibodies being passed as a result of measles vaccination & depending on when you were last vaxed – you are potentially at risk for catching it as the MMR doesn’t last for life, it requires boosters for many. I had titers taken when I was 25 & even though I had all the recommended shots, some of my titers came back negative, meaning they had worn off & because I was going overseas I had them redone. Measles was fine for me though as I had measles as well as mumps. My rubella had waned though. The flu vaccine you received doesn’t cover your newborn now but swine flu season is over really & should be of little to no concern now. The flu shot is only good for THAT year/flu season. It is not designed to protect you for next year & they never claim it will. However if you are nursing, your baby is unlikely to become ill from the flu & if he does it should be mild. Same goes for your 18 month old who caught measles. Vaccinations do not guarantee you won’t get an illness but it is supposed to at least reduce the severity of symptoms. I would call your Dr back & get some clarification as to why he stated your baby is protected if you in fact never had the measles. Nursing again is the best thing you can do for the baby right now, as your body is exposed to what your 18 month old has & IS making antibodies right now to help boost your newborn’s defenses.

who knows if wool filled crib bumpers is safe for the baby?
I’m getting an organic crib set, and i would like to know if a new born would be allergic to a wool filled bumper and covered with organic cotton fabric
Thank you to all of you, I didn’t realize that bumpers in general are bad untill i read your comments and did research.
I would not use them. I personally have read and would prefer using mesh bumpers or none at all. A newborn won’t bump into the crib bars as long as you’re using a sleeping positioner.
