Advice on to buy a knitting machine to make baby and kids clothes?
Hello. I’m new here and I plan on investing into a bonds knitting machine. however before I do I wanted to know if I could knit zoe mellor nursery knits on the machine? i really love her patterns and I really want to make her stuff for my 2 yr old son and baby stuff for my newborn due in august. is it hard to knit her stuff on a knitting machine? can any tell what machine would be best to knit baby and kids clothes on?
I don’t know the patterns that you mention so I can’t help you there. However if you are going to buy a knitting machine for baby and kids clothes I would go for a standard guage machine (gauge is the width between the needles). I think this is 5 or 6mm and is the most common machine around. this will knit fine yarns and some 8 ply. If you plan to knit mostly in heavier yarns you will be better off with a bulky/chunky machine with a guage of about 9mm. If you are buying secondhand, find out if you can source parts before you buy as some machines have gone out of business. If you buy secondhand, you will need to replace the sponge retaining bar before you begin. Once you have your chosen machine, allow yourself time to get familiar with it before you try anything complicated or you may get frustrated and give up. Good luck and happy knitting.

Ties on baby hats, good or bad?
I’m learning to knit hats for newborns and babies, and have seen patterns that call for crocheted ties and ones that don’t. I don’t have any babies, and it’s been a long time since I’ve been around one, so I thought I’d ask people who deal with babies and their clothes. Would you rather have a baby hat that you can tie under the chin, or one without dangling ties?
My daughter used to pull off her hats when she was really young, so I needed one with ties… Now, she loves to wear hats, and the ties just get in the way! A newborn probably doesn’t need them because they’re not going to be able to pull it off themselves… If you’re making them to sell (or even as gifts!), you could do some for older babies with ties and some without, as people will have different preferences.
